Nikah and walimah
awaitingAdminReview
happens
A contract made with both partners' consent, two witnesses, the bride's guardian (wali) in most schools, and the mahr: a gift the groom gives to the bride herself. A short sermon is given, and the families later host a wedding feast (walimah).
why
Marriage is a sacred contract with rights on both sides, and a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The mahr is the bride's own property, a sign of respect.
origins
Mahr: Qur'an 4:4. The bride's consent: Bukhari 5136. Walimah: "hold a feast, even with one sheep" (Bukhari 5167). Henna nights, dowry customs and dress vary by culture.
